During any working day I get asked a number of questions regarding hypnosis. I have listed a few down with some answers in this article.

Can anyone use Hypnosis?

The short answer to this question is yes of course; anyone can use Hypnosis. However some people find it easier than others to achieve a deep level of hypnosis. Later in the book you will learn how to put yourself into a Hypnotic trance. If you do have difficulty, just stay with it. It’s true what they say, “Practice makes perfect”. Even though Hypnosis is a completely normal state, I am showing you these techniques to teach you how to anchor its power, how to use it when you want, and not just when you use it naturally.

Is Hypnosis dangerous?

As I have mentioned before Hypnosis is a completely natural state. We go into trance regularly on a day to day basis. I don’t consider it to be dangerous whatsoever. You have probably heard stories about people being controlled while under Hypnosis, well I’m afraid that is Hollywood’s interpretations and they have no science to back them up. Certainly Hypnosis is extremely successful, but only in getting you what you want. You can’t be made in Hypnosis to do anything that you don’t want to and you will feel completely comfortable the whole time. However there is practical measures that you need to keep in mind. Obviously if you practice Hypnosis in the car while driving with your eyes shut, then you might have a problem. Actually it is not a good idea at all to listen to your recordings while driving.

What if I don’t wake up?

Hypnosis is a completely ordinary and regular state and it cannot hold you against your will. If you were to go so deep as to enter a truly deep trance state, you would basically go into natural sleep and wake up when you were ready to do so. It is not possible for anyone to be `left or stuck` in hypnosis. During your practice time, if there were an emergency or something that needed your attention, you could easily awaken yourself at any time and simply stop.

What will it feel like?

It is an exclusive experience! Trance is a natural state that is comparable to that feeling you get prior to you falling asleep at night. When you wake up, you feel invigorated and rejuvenated as though you have had a long sleep. You just feel as if you are relaxing in a very contented space with your eyes closed. You can pay attention to everything, the sounds outside the building, a car going down the street outside, whatever. You have full awareness the whole time, conscious of everything going on around you as well as what your sub-conscious is revealing to you. I compare it to watching television in one room while a radio is on in another; you can transfer your awareness back and forth switching between the two, absorbed in one but still conscious of the other.

How does Hypnosis differ from meditation?

In meditation you do enter a trance; however you just go with the flow and have little or no control over your experience. Hypnosis manipulates this trance state. You get to choose how deep you want to go and what you want to achieve while you are there. With Hypnosis you guide yourself all the way through and remain in complete control.

How will I know that I have been in Trance?

You will have to trust me on this one as everyone’s experience of trance is different. If you are ever able to watch somebody go into trance then you will notice that their whole face seems to change. They look so relaxed and almost like they are a different person. Unfortunately you can not see this on yourself when you are in trance. You probably also will not be bothered to notice what you body feels like as your conscious mind will be somewhere else, almost feeling dissociated from you body. You will notice that it will be possibly the most relaxed that you have ever been before. You will also know because of the results that you get. If you are using Hypnosis for a specific issue, you should notice improvements, obviously if it has improved then you have been in trance. When should I practice?

Personally I like to practice in the morning as this fits best into my day and also as it is such a powerful tool that it is great to help you plan your day! However you can practice when you wish, but it is a good idea to set a time and stick to it. Once you have been practicing regularly you will soon notice how quickly that it fits into your day to day routine and the more you practice then the more you will enjoy amazing results.

How long should I practice for?

Quality of time is more imperative than duration of time. Set aside some nominated time when you won’t be bothered by anyone or anything, 15 to 20 minutes a day as a guide. Keep in mind that time spent committed to self-hypnosis is time invested in yourself to make constructive self-change, so practice frequently. Also, as you become more experienced you may find that you need a lesser amount of time.

How long does it take to get results with Hypnosis?

The answer to this question is that it depends. Using Hypnosis certainly speeds up the process of change and also makes that change much more successful. However it does depend on how much work and time that you put in. The other key factor is the issue that you are dealing with. With a little time you will be able to work through most issues, however with some you may need to seek professional help from a fully qualified Hypnotherapist.

How Does Hypnosis Work – Quit Smoking

Lets look at how you may be able to stop smoking using hypnosis. Now you can feel the freedom without tobacco, how great It is to feel cigarettes no longer have that power over you. You want to stay here in this moment of no smoking for ever, and when you come back from your hypnotic state these thoughts will have been automatically accepted by your conscious mind and you will have no tobacco cravings.

If you choose hypnosis to help you quit smoking you should feel more relaxed and in control. Your intention to quit should still be clear in your mind. Your subconscious mind will kick in and help you to ignore the urge to “light up”. If you choose to quit smoking using hypnosis, you will avoid becoming dependent on nicotine replacement therapy and also avoid the side effects associated with prescription drugs.

The Reason Why Self Hypnosis Never Seems to Work

Self hypnosis is an extremely powerful tool when used to help you achieve your goals! Achieving goals, as with anything in life depends on your internal state. You can use the power of self hypnosis to program into your mind a plan for goal achievement and even instil new beliefs and behaviours that will help you reach your objectives. So why doesn’t self hypnosis work for everyone?
Many people fail to get any measurable results from self hypnosis because they are not using it correctly!
The first step you should take when considering using self hypnosis is to know what you want. Although this may sound elementary and a little condescending really consider it. Are you certain, in every deatil, as to how your life will benefit from reaching your goal? Do you know exactly what it is you want to gain from using self hypnosis? Or, do you just listen to a generic self hypnosis session and hope for the best?
For example, listening to a self hypnosis recording for more confidence may be a good goal but how do you quantify confidence? Do you want to be confident around other people or potential mates? Are you seeking to gain more confidence in your job or work-life? Is it really that you want to be more confident about your abilities and therefore it is your self-esteem that you are wishing to build?
For self hypnosis, like any other self improvement technique, to be effective you must use it with a goal in mind! Your goal, for use with self hypnosis, must be precise. You must make it as detailed as possible.
Try writing down a list of things you would like to achieve and then prioritize them. Take your most important desire and turn it into a goal. Write it down. Do it now!
Have you done it?
When you write down a goal you change it from a wish into a statement of intent. With this statement of intent you can program it into your subconscious mind, through self hypnosis, and make it your future reality. This makes your desire real and tangible and no longer a vague wish or dream. By doing this you have just created a powerful self hypnosis goal!
Now that you are clear on what you want and have created your first self hypnosis goal you need to finish this preliminary work before you ever enter a self hypnosis state.
You must now re-write your goal in the present tense as though you already have it. If you have major trouble feeling comfortable writing it in the present tense then write it as though it is in the process of coming true. Do not tate your goal as though it will come to you in the future! Never state what you do not want or include any of the things that you are trying to eliminate!
Your self hypnosis goal must state your intention positively and only include what you want. “I am debt free” is a bad example, for in order to be debt free you must first think of debt! “I am prosperous and wealthy”, is much better as it includes what you do want! “I am no longer uncomfortable in social situations”, is bad as you are focusing on your lack of confidence! “I am a highly confident person who is at ease with others in any situation”, is much more suitable as it states the positive outcome you are seeking!
The subconscious mind works, not in words, but in pictures. This becomes very apparent during self hypnosis. So whatever you do right at this moment don’t think of an elephant! What did you just think of? An elephant! Right?
In order not to think of an elephant your subconscious mind has to produce a picture of an elephant so it knows what you don’t want to think about! This is why it’s very important to never include what you do not want in your self hypnosis goal!
When you use self hypnosis to re-program your subconscious mind with this goal, the mental pictures you form will be automatically positive due to the wording of your goal. So only use positive, goal-affirming statements! Ensure your statements are detailed, positive and to the point. Doing this will force your subconscious mind to create pictures that reinforce your desires and it will use them as as a guide to creating your future!

There are many possibilities and reasons that can affect fertility in any couple’s attempt to have a successful pregnancy. If all health factors have been successfully ruled out, stress can be the main contributor to an inability to conceive and have a successful birth. Everyone I speak to either knows of a couple or nods in agreement when talking of “a couple who recently adopted and then found themselves pregnant naturally”. It seems to be quite a common story!
About a year ago a friend and her husband had been told by their doctor that their chances of conceiving naturally were quite slim, As a young healthy couple, they were quite shocked by this diagnosis and knowing that they both wanted a family, they decided to begin the cycle of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) treatments as soon as possible.
One day when visiting them, my friend showed me all the literature and the huge pack of different sized needles and long list of medication that she had been given by her doctor and were necessary for the process. As we chatted it became apparent that each cycle involved almost daily visits to the doctor, multiple shots to be self administered at specific times and medications for her and her husband. “Our lives are going to be entirely consumed with this process” she said, “but we want this so much that we are prepared to go through with it and do what ever it takes”.
In the weeks that followed I could tell that my friends were becoming more and more stressed by the process. Their first “try” had not been successful and they were moving forward onto a different procedure which was more complex and invasive. Fortunately they had a wonderful, skilled doctor who explained the procedures clearly and always had a positive outlook and a humorous twinkle in his eye. Nevertheless, my friend was finding the whole process tiring and stressful, fitting in frequent doctors appointments around her work schedule, having to be home at certain times in order to do her shots and hoping after each procedure that this time it would be successful.
As a hypnotist I wondered what I could offer her to aid her situation. How could I help? What was there, over and above stress relief that I could do? Having searched online I found Lyndsi Eastburns “Hypnosis for fertility” site and I immediately ordered her book “It’s Conceivable” and became trained as a “hypnosis for fertility” specialist.
We set up a series of “hypnosis for fertility” sessions, (the first being 2 hour session) in my office in New York at the International Center for Positive Change and Hypnosis and during the first session, after a detailed backgfround discussion, I took my friend into a comfortable state of relaxation. Knowing how important it was to be able to use self-hypnosis for stress relief, I gave her a one breath trigger, a quick and simple way to be able to always be able to access this comfortable state. I then took her deeper into hypnosis and into a beautiful garden where there was an abundance of new growth. In further hypnosis sessions she traveled inside her body, to her uterus and here I suggested that she make this area welcoming, and very beautiful. I encouraged her to image herself in the future holding her beautiful newborn baby, with her husband at her side, to step into this picture and to fully realize it…to see what she could see, hear what she could hear and to feel what she could feel.
In further sessions we used EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to tap away her concerns about becoming pregnant and also used hypnosis to go to her inner “control room” in order to balance and enhance anything in her life that needed adjusting.
After just 5 sessions with me, my friend called to share the wonderful news that the IFV procedure had been successful and that she was pregnant!
