What Exactly Is Self-Hypnosis?
A lot of people think there is some sort of mystery or hocus pocus surrounding the state of hypnosis or self-hypnosis. Since I’m a certified practitioner of this wonderful health tool, I’ve written this article to give you the four key facts about hypnosis, demystify the whole process, and hopefully shed some light on how you can use self-hypnosis to achieve any goal you want in your life.
First, did you know that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis? Did you know when you are hypnotized that no one can make you do anything against your morals or beliefs? Why? Because you have the free-will to accept or reject the suggestions your hypnotist gives you.
Second, did you know that every human being alive goes into a natural state of self-hypnosis 3 or 4 times a day? Let me give you some examples. Do you daydream? Have you ever stared at a burning candle or a fire place flame and got so relaxed and focused on the flame that someone said something to you and you did not hear what they said? What about when you’re watching TV or reading a book? Again, someone said something to you, but you were so focused on the TV show or the words on the page of your book that you did not hear them. These are examples of natural states of self-hypnosis. My favorite way to experience self-hypnosis is called, “Road Hypnosis.” This happens while I am driving down the road and I completely miss my turn or I didn’t even remember passing the street. Ha! Has that ever happened to you? This is also a natural state of self-hypnosis.
Third, the most important thing you need to understand when you are in self-hypnosis is at that moment in time, you are in the most highly suggestible state for your subconscious mind, which makes up 90% of your mind, to accept suggestions. Yes, both good and bad suggestions. Why is this important? Because all of your good/bad habits and good/bad beliefs are stored in your subconscious mind.
And fourth, research has proven that self-hypnosis is the quickest and easiest way to change your behavior. In essence, what you are really learning to do is dehypnotize yourself from that negative self-talk that I call Radio Station, K-R-A-Z-Y and learn to train your “inner critic” to be your best friend by embracing more positive self-talk. The good news is that when you learn to practice self-hypnosis, you have a lifetime tool that no one can ever take away from you, and any goal you want to achieve is possible!

I emailed Mr. Langford for information on self-hypnosis. He was willing to share his thoughts with me. Here they are:
“What many people do not realize is that almost all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. What do I mean by that? Well to begin with, you cannot be forced into a hypnotic state in a clinical setting. You also cannot be forced to do something that is against your morals or ethics or to reveal secrets. The reason for this is that you never lose the ability to think about what the hypnotist is saying to you. You go into hypnosis voluntarily as the hypnotherapist guides you into the “trance” state. There are many misconceptions about hypnosis and one of the most prevalent is that when you are hypnotized you are under a spell or the power of the hypnotist. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When you are in hypnosis you never lose consciousness.”
“I have hypnotized hundreds of people,” Mr. Langford said, “And though quite a few of them did find it so relaxing that they fell asleep, no one ever lost consciousness or passed out. It simply doesn’t happen. About one out of ten people is what is called a “somnambulist,” meaning they are exceptional hypnosis subjects and go extremely deep into hypnosis and do not remember much if anything of what happened when they were hypnotized.”
Mr. Langford went on to say,”But hypnosis is actually a focused state of concentration, so people who are hypnotized are actually able to concentrate and focus their minds better than when they are not hypnotized. That is why hypnosis is sometimes used by students before taking a test, to relieve test anxiety and to focus their attention.
Another interesting fact about hypnosis is that it is a natural state and everyone goes through the same brain-wave states of hypnosis at least twice a day when they are falling asleep and waking up. You naturally go through the same process when you start to calm down and fall asleep every day, so you can easily go into hypnosis with a little coaching and practice.
The best way to learn self-hypnosis is by using a CD that is custom tailored to your needs and that guides you into hypnosis with a simple progressive relaxation exercise. There are just a few simple steps, such as taking deep breaths and closing your eyes.
Once you have learned how to go into self-hypnosis you may use it for anything you want to change in your behavior. Voluminous clinical studies also indicate that hypnosis can reduce the acute pain experienced by patients undergoing burn-wound debridement, children enduring bone marrow aspirations and women in labor.
A meta-analysis published in a recent special issue of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, for example, found that hypnotic suggestions relieved the pain of 75 percent of 933 subjects participating in 27 different experiments. The pain-relieving effect of hypnosis is often substantial, and in a few cases the degree of relief matches or exceeds that provided by morphine.” (2)
If severe pain can be controlled by hypnosis then one can imagine weight loss cravings also being controlled by hypnosis.
Also, given the dubious safety and effectiveness of diet pills and the hazards of invasive and often ineffective surgery, one must wonder why, if hypnosis is so obviously effective for pain management, why isn’t it used before drastic and very expensive steps for weight loss are taken?
And, since hypnosis has been proven to have the ability to match or exceed the power of morphine then one must wonder how much better hypnosis is than diet pills and diet patches.
